A Northern Perspective: Learn, Explore, Connect.
Discover the many sides of the Yukon, where spectacular landscapes meet colourful local communities. From the capital city of Whitehorse to the mountain ranges of Kluane National Park, and onward to the historic Gold Rush town of Dawson City, each stop offers a different opportunity to learn about the rich, complex stories that have shaped the North.
People, Place, and Purpose
Participate in social purpose organizations and community development initiatives to see how people work together to survive and thrive in the far North. Engage with climate change scientists at Kluane Lake Research station, learn about food sustainability from a Dawson City filmmaker, discover traditional harvesting and medicinal knowledge through hands-on workshops with expert gatherers, and create your own blown-glass art piece. Visit a local preserve to see indigenous wildlife and examine the connections between environmental protection, economic activity, and community well-being.
Nature, Climate and Northern Life
Witness breathtaking scenery and immersion in the vast northern wilderness. Explore a variety of landscapes: Canada’s tallest mountains in Kluane National Park, the dense boreal forests of the taiga, the unique Klondike goldfields and the sub-arctic tundra in Tombstone Park. Gain perspectives on climate change impacts through place-based education and lean about local ecology from expert guides. Tackle invigorating hiking trails in the mountains, visit spectacular natural sites along the Yukon river, and practise survival skills and remote living at an off-grid lakeside lodge.
Culture, History and First Nations Perspectives
Meet with elders, medicine women and knowledge-keepers from a variety of the Yukon’s First Nations. Participate in crafting, storytelling and cultural presentations to understand indigenous culture and relationships with the land and learn about the unique history of self-government and community development in the Yukon. Gain insights into the history of the Klondike Gold Rush and how it shaped modern-day contexts, through facilitated experiential learning with local guides at historic sites in Dawson City.
